What level of SQL and Data Visualization skills are required for a modern Business Analyst?
I'm seeing more job descriptions for Business Analysts that require SQL, Power BI, and Tableau. Is the role moving more toward Data Science, or is this just for specific industries? How much "technical" data skill do I really need to stay competitive in the current market if I want to work in enterprise-level software projects?

The modern BA must be "data-literate." While you don't need to be a Data Scientist, being able to write SQL queries to validate your own data is a game-changer. It allows you to perform "Evidence-Based Analysis" rather than relying on what stakeholders believe to be true. Similarly, tools like Power BI or Tableau are essential for "Data Storytelling." Presenting a stakeholder with a visual dashboard of their current process inefficiencies is much more persuasive than a static spreadsheet. These skills allow you to prove the "As-Is" state and justify the "To-Be" solution with hard metrics, making you an invaluable asset to the leadership team.

Data literacy is vital, but what about the risk of becoming a "Report Developer" instead of a "Business Analyst"? Are you worried that by showing these skills, you'll spend all your time building dashboards instead of doing deep-dive process improvement and requirements engineering work?

Christopher, that is a legitimate concern. I make it clear that I use data visualization as a "Diagnostic Tool" for my analysis. I build the initial dashboards to identify the business problem, but once the requirements are defined, I hand over the long-term reporting to the Business Intelligence (BI) team. This allows me to stay focused on solving the problem rather than just reporting on it.

Knowing the basics of "Data Modeling" (like Star Schema) is just as important as the SQL itself. It helps you understand how the system actually stores the data you are trying to analyze.
