Is private enterprise blockchain still a thing, or has every company moved to public chains?

A few years ago, every big bank wanted a private Hyperledger or Corda network. Now, it seems like JP Morgan and BlackRock are using public networks like Ethereum for tokenization. In 2025, did the dream of "Private Blockchains" die? I’m trying to decide if I should learn Enterprise tools or just stick to Solidity for my career growth in the blockchain space.

All answers to this question.

The trend is definitely shifting toward "Hybrid" models. In 2023, institutions realized that a private blockchain is often just a slow database. The real value is "Global Interoperability." Banks are now using public chains but with "Privacy Layers" or Zero-Knowledge Proofs to keep sensitive transaction data hidden while still benefiting from the public network's security. If you want a long career, focus on Solidity and ZK-circuit programming. That's where the high-paying enterprise roles are moving.

Melissa, does this mean that Hyperledger is becoming obsolete, or are there still specific use cases in supply chain management where it makes more sense than a public chain?

  • Steven, Hyperledger still has a place in highly regulated consortia where every participant must be known and vetted. Supply chains with 10-20 fixed partners don't necessarily need the "permissionless" nature of Ethereum. However, the job market for Hyperledger is shrinking compared to the explosive growth in the EVM ecosystem. If you want flexibility in your career, I’d prioritize learning how to bridge those two worlds.

Public chains won because they have the "Lindy Effect"—they've been battle-tested for years against constant attacks. No private network can claim that level of security.

  • Exactly, Jason. Trust is the primary product of a blockchain. You can't manufacture that in a closed private network as effectively as you can on a global, decentralized one.
