How are Data Scientists earning money through the GPT Store and custom AI Agents in 2026?
I’m interested in the revenue-sharing models for custom GPTs. If I build a specialized Data Analysis agent for the healthcare sector, is there a significant market for it? How much can a freelance Data Scientist realistically expect to make from "renting out" their expertise via an automated AI agent? Is this better than traditional consulting?

The GPT Store has become very competitive, but the "Healthcare" niche you mentioned is actually very lucrative because of compliance requirements. I’ve been selling a custom "HIPAA-Aware Data Cleaner" agent since early 2024. The key isn't the AI itself, but the proprietary "knowledge base" you upload to it. If you have unique datasets or a specific methodology that a general AI doesn't have, people will pay for it. I’m currently making about $1,200 a month in passive royalties, but it required about 100 hours of initial setup and testing.

Is the revenue split from these stores actually fair to the developers, or are the platform fees eating up all the potential profit for independent creators?

Caleb, the fees are high (around 30%), but the "reach" is what you're paying for. Building your own platform and marketing it would cost way more. I view it as a lead-generation tool. People find my "mini-agent" in the store, and then they hire me for high-ticket consulting work once they see how much I know about the domain. It’s a hybrid income model.

It’s a great way to build a personal brand. Even if the store doesn't make you rich, having a "Top 10 Agent" on your resume is a massive flex for future employers.

Exactly, Shawn. It's the new "GitHub profile." It proves you can actually build and deploy a solution that people find useful.
