Is Digital Marketing becoming a casualty of the AI growth and layoff trend?

I’m seeing a lot of creative agencies cutting staff while claiming they are "optimizing with AI." Why are tech layoffs still happening even after AI growth? It feels like digital marketing is being hit the hardest because GenAI can write copy and make images so quickly. Is there a future for human marketers, or are we just going to be "AI editors" from now on?

All answers to this question.

The industry is definitely at a crossroads. We are seeing a massive "middle-market" collapse where standard content creation—the kind that used to require a team of five—can now be done by one person using sophisticated AI tools. This is why the layoffs are happening; the math of human-produced content vs. AI-augmented content has changed. However, the human element is moving toward strategy, brand voice, and complex multi-channel orchestration. The people being laid off are often those who stayed in the "production" lane and didn't move into the "strategy" lane where human nuance is still vital.

But don't you think the market will eventually get flooded with low-quality AI content, making the human "premium" voice even more valuable? Will companies realize this before they fire everyone?

  • Raymond, that’s the billion-dollar question. We are already seeing "AI fatigue" in some audiences. Forward-thinking companies are keeping their core creative talent but giving them AI tools to work faster. The companies doing mass layoffs in digital marketing right now might find themselves in a year with a generic brand voice that nobody cares about, and they’ll have to re-hire at a premium.

Layoffs are happening because companies want to boost their margins. If an AI can do 80% of the work for 1% of the cost, they will take that deal every time.

  • Sadly true, Carol. But that remaining 20% of human work is what makes a campaign actually convert. You can’t automate empathy in digital marketing yet.
