Has the rise of Platform Engineering made traditional DevOps roles redundant in modern tech teams?
My company is moving toward "Internal Developer Platforms" and it feels like my job title is changing every few months. I’m starting to wonder, Is DevOps still relevant or evolving into something bigger? It seems like we are moving away from just "culture" and into heavy automation layers that manage themselves. I’d love to hear how others are adapting their skill sets right now.

All answers to this question.
From what I have seen in the industry, we aren't seeing the death of the movement, but rather its maturation. The original goal was to break silos, but we ended up creating a new silo of "DevOps Engineers" who were just overworked sysadmins. By moving toward Platform Engineering, we are finally fulfilling the promise of developer self-service. You aren't becoming redundant; your focus is just shifting from manual pipeline builds to architecting the systems that build those pipelines automatically. It's a higher level of thinking that requires more focus on internal product management than just writing YAML files all day long.

Are you finding that your developers actually want to manage their own infrastructure, or are they resisting the "shift left" movement?

That is a great question, Jeffrey. In my experience, developers are split. Some love the control, but most just want to write code without worrying about Kubernetes clusters. That is why I think the evolution is toward making the infrastructure "invisible." We are building the paved roads so they can drive fast without needing to know how the asphalt was laid. It’s definitely a shift in how we provide value to the team.

I think it's just a rebranding. At the end of the day, someone still needs to ensure the code reaches production safely and efficiently regardless of the title.

Exactly, Melissa. Whether we call it DevOps, SRE, or Platform Engineering, the core principles of CI/CD and monitoring remain the heartbeat of any successful software delivery team.
