How can I use Data Storytelling to make my presentations more persuasive?

I have all the data and my charts are accurate, but I feel like I'm losing my audience during presentations. How do I move beyond just "showing charts" and actually tell a story with data? What are the narrative structures that work best for data-driven insights in a corporate setting?

All answers to this question.

The secret to data storytelling is the "Context-Action-Result" framework. Don't start with the chart; start with the business problem (the context). Then, show the data that highlights the tension or the "aha!" moment. Finally, conclude with a clear recommendation (the action). You want to lead your audience through a journey where the data is the evidence, not the main character. Also, use "preattentive attributes" like color or size to point exactly where the audience should look on the slide so they aren't scanning the whole page while you are talking.

Do you think it’s better to provide all the data upfront to prove your thoroughness, or should you only show the specific data points that support your main narrative to keep it simple?

  • Jeffrey, definitely go for the "less is more" approach for the main deck. If you show too much data to "prove" your work, you'll just confuse the message. Keep the exhaustive data in an "Appendix" at the end of the presentation. If someone questions your thoroughness, you can jump to those slides instantly, but for the main story, only show what is essential to drive the decision-making process.

Always remember that your audience cares about the "So What?" more than the data itself. Every slide should answer why this data matters to their specific department.

  • Precisely, Amy! If you can't explain why a data point matters to the person sitting across from you, it's better to leave it out of the presentation entirely.
