How will Cyber Security adapt to a workplace that is "remote by default" in 2030?

With the 2030 office being more of an "event venue" than a daily requirement, the attack surface for companies is going to explode. In the Cyber Security domain, how will we manage when employees are accessing sensitive data from AR glasses in a park or a coffee shop? What exactly happens when the physical perimeter of the office completely vanishes? I'm curious about the specific tech shifts needed to keep intellectual property safe in a world of total mobility.

All answers to this question.

By 2030, the traditional "VPN" will be a relic of the past. We will rely almost entirely on where identity is verified continuously through behavioral biometrics—like the way you type or move your mouse. Security will be "ambient," meaning it follows the user regardless of their device or location. This allows for total mobility because the system doesn't trust a "secure network"; it only trusts a verified identity and a healthy device, making the physical office's security irrelevant.

Continuous biometrics sounds like a privacy nightmare. Won't employees feel uncomfortable knowing the system is constantly "watching" their physical movements to verify identity?

  • Douglas, that's the trade-off for total freedom of movement. If you want to work from a beach in Bali, the company needs a way to ensure it's actually you and not someone who stole your headset. The challenge for 2030 will be making these "silent" security checks feel helpful rather than intrusive, perhaps by keeping all biometric processing local to the user's hardware.

AI-driven threat detection will be so fast by then that most attacks will be blocked before a human even realizes there was an attempt.

  • Absolutely, Diana. We're moving toward "Self-Healing Networks." In the 2030 landscape, cybersecurity will be less about reacting to breaches and more about the AI proactively sealing vulnerabilities in real-time.
