Is MetaGPT cost-effective for small startups compared to hiring a freelancer?

We are a tiny startup with a limited budget. Hiring a freelancer for a simple MVP could cost thousands, but running MetaGPT with GPT-4 APIs isn't exactly free either. Has anyone done a cost-benefit analysis? How many tokens does a standard project consume when you have five different agents talking to each other?

All answers to this question.

I ran a full cycle for a crypto-tracker app using MetaGPT, and it cost about $45 in GPT-4 tokens for the initial build and three rounds of debugging. Compared to a freelancer who might charge $50/hour and take 20 hours for the same work, the savings are massive. However, you have to factor in your own time spent as the "supervisor." I spent about 4 hours guiding the agents and fixing a few API connection strings they got wrong. If your time is worth $100/hour, you're still coming out way ahead. It’s perfect for getting a functional prototype into the hands of investors within a day.

What happens if the agents get stuck in a loop? I've seen some of these multi-agent systems burn through $20 in five minutes because two agents keep "correcting" each other without making progress. Does MetaGPT have a kill-switch?

  • Yes, you can set a maximum budget or a maximum number of iterations in the config. MetaGPT is actually better at avoiding loops than AutoGPT because its SOPs are linear. An agent finishes its document, passes it on, and usually stops until it’s called again. It’s much more controlled than a purely autonomous agent.

For an MVP, it’s unbeatable. You get a PRD, design specs, and code for the price of a nice dinner. Just don't expect it to build the next Facebook overnight.

  • Well said! It’s all about managing expectations. Use it as a "force multiplier" for your existing ideas rather than a total replacement for human thought.
