Will the expansion of Cloud Technology lead to a sustainable job market rebound?

I'm trying to stay optimistic about the 2024-2025 outlook. Many analysts point to the growth in digital infrastructure as a sign of health. Do you believe the ongoing investment in Cloud Technology will eventually create a surplus of new roles to replace the ones lost during the recent layoffs, or is this just a leaner way of operating that won't require a large workforce?

All answers to this question.

History shows that major technological shifts usually create more jobs than they destroy, but there is always a painful lag period. We are currently in that lag. As companies migrate more of their core operations to Cloud Technology, they initially cut the "manual" IT maintenance roles. However, this eventually creates a massive demand for security experts, data architects, and integration specialists. I’ve seen this pattern before. The market isn't necessarily getting worse; it's evolving. The problem is that the workforce hasn't fully upskilled to meet the new demand yet, which creates a "talent gap" that looks like a high unemployment rate in certain niches.

Are the new roles being created actually paying as well as the traditional roles that are being phased out?

  • Sean, that’s the catch. The specialized Cloud Technology roles often pay significantly more, but the entry-level floor has been raised. You can’t just walk into a junior role with a basic degree anymore; you need specific certifications and hands-on experience with AWS or Azure. So, while the total "wealth" in the market might be increasing, the accessibility for new graduates is definitely becoming more restricted compared to five years ago.

I think the market is just "normalizing" after the 2021 hiring frenzy. It feels worse only because that peak was so unsustainable.

  • Spot on, Megan. We are returning to a 2019 baseline, and Cloud Technology is just the engine driving the new standard of corporate efficiency.
