Does a potential US recession affect the adoption of Cloud Technology for SMEs?

I run a small tech firm and we are debating moving our local servers to the cloud. However, with the question of are we heading toward another recession in the US, I’m worried about the recurring monthly costs of AWS or Azure. Is it safer to stay on-prem for now?

All answers to this question.

This is a classic "CapEx vs OpEx" debate. In a recession, cash is king, so spending a large lump sum on hardware (CapEx) is often seen as riskier than a monthly subscription (OpEx). Cloud providers also offer "Pay-as-you-go" models, which allow you to scale down instantly if your business slows down. If you stay on-prem and the US enters a recession, you are stuck with expensive hardware that you might not be fully utilizing. I’ve seen many SMEs survive the last dip specifically because they could shrink their cloud footprint to match their reduced revenue.

Kimberly, wouldn't the rising interest rates make the financing of on-premise hardware even more expensive than the standard cloud subscription fees anyway?

  • You hit the nail on the head, Daniel. With high interest rates, borrowing money to buy servers is a losing game. Cloud services allow you to avoid that debt entirely. Plus, you save on the electricity and cooling costs of a local data center, which are also rising. For a small firm, the flexibility of the cloud is the best insurance policy against an unpredictable US economy.

Cloud is definitely better for flexibility. You can't "return" a server to the store because your sales dropped, but you can turn off a cloud instance.

  • Well said, Anthony. That elasticity is the biggest selling point for cloud tech, especially when we aren't sure what the market will do next month.
