Do cloud tech employers value certs over university degrees

I'm restructuring our infrastructure curriculum and exploring this core professional dilemma. Would you choose a degree or industry certifications if starting today? When looking at cloud architecture roles, engineering leads see applicants with degrees who struggle with live command-line environments. Do certifications validate practical readiness better?

All answers to this question.

The reality of cloud technology infrastructure today is that university degrees simply change too slowly to cover live vendor platforms. A student can spend four years earning a computer science degree without ever launching an enterprise virtual private cloud or managing live microservices. Vendor-specific certifications force you to work inside real lab environments, building immediate tactical capability. If the modern tech industry rewards rapid, secure deployment at scale, then optimizing for targeted certifications is the smartest path to entry-level employment.

Could this structural gap be resolved if universities partnered directly with cloud vendors to embed active certifications into the degree tracks?

  • Douglas, that hybrid approach is exactly what a few innovative academies are starting to implement. Keeping the academic foundation for long-term algorithmic thinking while using vendor certifications for hands-on infrastructure deployment gives students the ultimate advantage. It ensures they graduate with both strategic vision and immediate operational deployment skills.

Industry certifications have completely changed the required tech skill set from abstract academic memorization to active cloud architecture strategy and live orchestration.

  • I completely agree with Clifford. General degrees are no longer a true differentiator in cloud spaces; the real market value now lies in verifiable, platform-specific architectural expertise.
