Do cloud infrastructure teams prioritize engineering degrees or certifications?

I am looking into cloud architecture career paths to determine if employers care more about skills or degrees in 2026. Can a self-taught engineer with multi-cloud certifications bypass the traditional HR filters?

All answers to this question.

Cloud architecture is an area where specific platform capability is absolutely mandatory, which gives a significant advantage to certified specialists. An engineering degree shows that you understand general computing concepts, but it doesn't verify that you know how to configure secure virtual networks or orchestrate automated container deployments on live systems. Enterprise groups are managing highly complex system migrations and hybrid environments; they require engineers who hold verified, up-to-date credentials from major providers, ensuring the team can minimize downtime and prevent critical infrastructure vulnerabilities.

Aren't we downplaying the reality that deep systemic knowledge of operating systems and core hardware networks, usually taught in universities, is vital for debugging complex cloud failures?

  • Larry, those fundamental concepts are absolutely crucial, but they are no longer exclusive to a university lecture hall. Dedicated cloud practitioners can master low-level networking and system architecture through rigorous sandbox labs and advanced technical certificates. What matters to the employer is that you can apply that foundational knowledge directly to a live cloud console.

Passing a live simulation scenario during the technical interview phase carries infinitely more weight than whatever major is printed on your diploma.

  • Completely agree, Russell. At the end of the day, a major outage doesn't care about your university pedigree; the engineering team needs people who can dive into the command line and restore services immediately.
