How much does a CISSP certification increase a Cyber Security salary?

I have five years of experience in network security and I am considering sitting for the CISSP exam. I keep hearing it's the "gold standard," but is the salary jump significant enough to justify the study time? Does it actually help in landing CISO or Security Architect roles that pay over $180k?

All answers to this question.

Obtaining your CISSP is perhaps the single most impactful move you can make for your earning potential in Information Security. On average, CISSP holders earn about 25% to 35% more than their non-certified peers. For roles like Security Architect or IT Security Manager, it is often a mandatory requirement during the screening process. I’ve seen professionals move from a $120,000 Analyst role to a $175,000 Architect role almost immediately after getting certified and updating their LinkedIn profile.

Is it true that the CISSP is becoming less relevant for technical roles and more for management, or does it still hold weight for hands-on engineers?

  • Mark, while it’s true that CISSP is management-heavy, it acts as a "gatekeeper" certification for almost any high-paying senior role. Even for hands-on Lead Engineers, having those five letters on your resume proves you understand the broader risk management framework. It gives HR the confidence to put you in the high-salary bracket because it validates your comprehensive knowledge of the eight security domains.

It definitely helps with government contracts and big banking roles. Those sectors won't even look at your resume without a CISSP or CISM.

  • That is a great point, Susan. In industries like Finance and Defense, the CISSP isn't just a bonus; it’s basically your license to practice at a senior level.
