How do I build a home lab for Ethical Hacking without spending a fortune on hardware?

I want to start practicing for my CEH and PenTest+ certifications. I have an old laptop with 16GB of RAM. Is that enough to run a virtualized environment with Kali Linux and a few vulnerable VMs like Metasploitable? What are the best free resources for legal hacking targets?

All answers to this question.

16GB of RAM is actually a great starting point! You can easily run VirtualBox or VMware Player. I recommend running Kali Linux as your "attacker" machine and Metasploitable 2 or 3 as your target. To save resources, run your target VMs in "headless" mode if you don't need a GUI. For legal targets, TryHackMe is fantastic for beginners because it's guided, while Hack The Box is better once you have the basics down. VulnHub is also a classic for downloading offline VMs. Just ensure your lab is on a "Host-Only" or "Internal" network so you don't accidentally scan your ISP.

Are you planning to focus more on web app penetration testing or are you looking to get into network-level exploits and Active Directory hacking?

  • If you want to do Active Directory, you'll eventually need more RAM to run a Windows Server VM and a couple of Windows 10/11 clients. For now, stick to Linux-based targets. Also, check out the "OWASP Juice Shop" for web hacking—it's free, fun, and very educational for learning how modern vulnerabilities actually work in a real-world scenario.

Look into Docker! It's much lighter than full virtual machines. You can spin up vulnerable containers in seconds without killing your laptop's performance.

  • Docker is a game changer for lab environments. Thanks for the tip, Linda. It’s definitely the way to go for running multiple microservices to attack.
