Does a Blockchain Developer still earn more than a Full Stack Developer?

With all the fluctuations in the crypto market, I am wondering if the high salaries for Blockchain Developers are still a thing. I am currently a Full Stack Developer (MERN stack) and I am considering learning Solidity and Rust. Is the "Blockchain premium" still real in 2024? If I transition into Web3, can I realistically expect a 40% jump in my base salary, or has the market corrected itself to match standard software development pay?

All answers to this question.

The "crypto hype" salaries have definitely cooled down, but the demand for serious Blockchain Engineers in the Enterprise space (think JP Morgan or IBM) is still very high. While a junior dev might not see a 40% jump, an experienced Full Stack dev who masters Smart Contract Security can easily command a premium. The highest pay now isn't in "DOGE clones," but in Layer 2 scaling solutions and ZK-proofs. If you focus on the infrastructure side rather than just frontend DApps, the salary gap between you and a standard web dev will remain quite large.

Are you seeing more demand for Rust-based chains like Solana, or is the industry still mostly dominated by Ethereum's Solidity for the high-paying roles?

  • Steven, Solidity is still the king for total job volume, but Rust (Solana/Polkadot) is where the "scarcity premium" is right now. Because Rust is a harder language to master, companies are willing to pay significantly more for competent developers. If you already know C++ or have a strong systems programming background, learning Rust for Blockchain is probably your fastest path to a $180k+ remote role. It's all about the difficulty of the barrier to entry.

Web3 is still paying very well for anyone who understands security. One bug can cost millions, so security-focused devs are the highest paid in the niche.

  • Margaret is spot on. Auditing and security in blockchain are where the most insane daily rates are currently being paid to consultants.
