What is the best project tracking software for managing complex dependencies?
I'm managing a construction-style project where Task B cannot start until Task A is 50% done. Simple list apps aren't cutting it. I need something with advanced Gantt charts and critical path analysis. What software handles complex task dependencies and automated rescheduling best?

TeamGantt is another visual-first option that makes setting up dependencies as easy as dragging a line between two bars on the timeline.

I second TeamGantt. It's much prettier than MS Project and much faster for small to mid-sized teams to adopt without a week-long training course.

For the level of complexity you're describing, you really need to step away from "task managers" and move toward "project scheduling" engines. Microsoft Project is the veteran here for a reason; its ability to handle "Finish-to-Start" or "Start-to-Start" dependencies with lead and lag time is unmatched. If you want something cloud-based and more modern, Smartsheet is an excellent alternative. It looks like an Excel sheet but has a powerful Gantt engine that automatically recalculates dates across the entire chain when one milestone slips, which is vital for critical path management.

Does your team find the steep learning curve of Microsoft Project to be a barrier to daily updates?

Thomas, it definitely can be. That is why many firms hire a dedicated Project Coordinator just to maintain the schedule. However, Smartsheet is much more "user-friendly" for the average team member. They can update their specific rows without needing to understand the underlying logic of the entire CPM network. It balances the power of a scheduling engine with the ease of a shared spreadsheet.
