What are the best practices for AI-driven Creative Optimization in Digital Advertising?

Our team is starting to use AI tools for Dynamic Creative Optimization (DCO) to personalize our ad visuals in real-time. We want the ad to change based on the user's local weather or browsing history. What are the common pitfalls when setting up these automated creative feeds, and how do you ensure the brand voice stays consistent across thousands of AI-generated variations?

All answers to this question.

The biggest pitfall with DCO is "over-segmentation." If you create too many variations, you’ll never get enough data on any single one to know if it's actually working. Start with 3–5 core templates where only specific elements like the CTA or the background image change. To maintain brand voice, we use "Brand Guardrails" within our AI tools—essentially a set of fixed rules for fonts, colors, and logo placement that the AI cannot override. This ensures that no matter how much the message personalizes, it always looks and feels like our brand.

Samantha, how are you handling the approval process for these? Does a human still look at every variation, or are you fully trusting the AI to generate and push the ads live without a final check?

  • Bradley, we definitely don't let it go fully rogue. We use a "Batch Approval" system where we review the logic and a sample of about 50 variations before the campaign launches. Once the rules are verified, we let the AI swap assets within those approved parameters. It’s impossible for a human to check 5,000 variations individually, so you have to move from "approving assets" to "approving the logic" that generates them. This approach has saved us weeks of manual design work.

Focus on your data feed first. If your product feed is messy or has broken links, the AI will just generate thousands of broken ads. Clean data is the foundation of any good DCO strategy.

  • Victoria is spot on. I’ve seen DCO campaigns fail because the "Price" field in the feed was empty, leading to ads that said "Buy now for $0.00." Testing the feed is 90% of the work.
