Which Generative AI certifications are actually worth the investment for career growth in 2024?

There are so many GenAI certifications popping up from Microsoft, AWS, and Google. As someone already in a tech role, which of these holds the most weight for a resume? I want to ensure that the time and money spent on these credentials will actually lead to a salary bump or a more specialized role in AI engineering or model deployment.

All answers to this question.

If you are looking for ROI, the AWS Certified AI Practitioner and the Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate are currently the gold standards. AWS is dominant in the enterprise space, especially with their Bedrock service, so understanding how to deploy foundation models there is highly valuable. These certifications don't just test your ability to use a chatbot; they verify your understanding of infrastructure, vector databases, and model monitoring, which are the skills that actually command six-figure salaries.

Do you think these cloud-specific certifications are better than a university-backed professional certificate from places like Stanford or MIT for a mid-career pivot?

  • David, that depends on your goal. University certificates are great for networking and prestige, but cloud certifications prove you can actually "build" on their platforms. For a mid-career pivot into an engineering role, the practical skills from an Azure or AWS cert often carry more weight during technical interviews because they show you’re ready to hit the ground running with their specific stack.

I’d suggest starting with the free tier of these platforms to see which ecosystem feels more intuitive to you before paying for the exam. The hands-on labs are where the real learning happens.

  • That is excellent advice, Linda. I did the same with Google Cloud's Vertex AI labs before sitting for the exam and it made the conceptual parts much easier to grasp.
