Which entry-level certifications are best for a career transition in 2024?

I am currently working in general IT support but want to move into a dedicated <Cybersecurity> role by the end of the year. Between Security+, GSEC, and SSCP, which one carries the most weight with recruiters right now for someone without a formal degree in the field? Any advice would be huge!

All answers to this question.

For a smooth transition, CompTIA Security+ remains the "gold standard" for entry-level roles because it is vendor-neutral and highly recognized by HR departments globally. It covers a broad range of <Cybersecurity> topics from risk management to basic cryptography. If you want to stand out, I’d recommend pairing it with some hands-on experience via platforms like TryHackMe or HackTheBox. Most recruiters in 2024 are looking for a balance of theoretical knowledge and the ability to navigate a Linux terminal or analyze a basic packet capture effectively.

Do you think focusing on cloud-specific security certs like CCSP might be more lucrative than the general certifications you mentioned earlier?

  • Matthew, that depends on your goal. While CCSP is fantastic, it's often considered mid-level. For a beginner, mastering the fundamentals through Security+ first makes the cloud concepts much easier to grasp later. Don't skip the basics!

I started with Security+ and landed a Junior Analyst role within four months. It really helps bridge the gap between general IT and security-specific tasks.

  • Congrats, Christopher! It’s also worth noting that many government roles specifically require Security+ for compliance, so it’s a very safe bet for job security.
