Which entry-level cloud certification provides the best career ROI for beginners in 2026?

I'm starting from zero in IT and want to know which foundational certification is most respected by employers today. Between the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900), and Google Cloud Digital Leader, which one offers the most job opportunities for someone with no prior technical experience in cloud-native environments?

All answers to this question.

From an industry perspective, the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner remains the gold standard for absolute beginners because AWS still holds the largest global market share. It covers the basics of the shared responsibility model, billing, and core services like EC2 and S3. However, if you are looking to work in a large corporate environment, the Azure AZ-900 is gaining massive ground due to Microsoft’s deep integration with enterprise tools. My advice is to check the job postings in your specific city; if most local companies use Windows-based stacks, Azure might actually provide a faster "foot in the door" than AWS.

Do you think it’s a waste of time to get more than one foundational cert, or does having both AWS and Azure on a resume show that I am a more versatile "Multi-Cloud" candidate?

  • Hi Gregory! Honestly, for a beginner, I’d say it's a bit redundant. The foundational exams overlap by about 80% in terms of concepts like IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. It’s much better to pick one platform, get the foundational cert, and then immediately move up to the Associate level (like AWS Solutions Architect Associate). That’s where the real technical hiring starts. Showing depth in one cloud is usually more impressive to hiring managers than showing a surface-level "hello world" understanding of three different clouds.

If you are interested in AI and Data Science specifically, Google Cloud’s Digital Leader cert is the way to go. Their platform is heavily optimized for machine learning workloads.

  • Jeffrey is spot on. I’ve noticed a lot of startups focusing on BigQuery and Vertex AI lately, and they specifically look for people who know the GCP ecosystem from the start.
