Should I pursue an Agile and Scrum certification to pivot into tech management in my 30s?

I have been a middle manager in a traditional manufacturing firm for a long time. I want to move into a Scrum Master role in the tech sector, but I’m worried it’s too late to switch to IT in your 30s in the US without having a developer background. Is it possible to lead technical teams if you aren't a coder yourself? How do I convince recruiters I can handle a dev team?

All answers to this question.

A Scrum Master is a "servant leader," not a technical lead. Your job is to remove blockers and facilitate the process, not to write the code. In many ways, being a non-coder helps because you won't be tempted to micromanage the technical implementation. I moved from healthcare management to a Senior Scrum Master role at 36. Focus on getting your CSM or PSM I certification and learn the "lingo" of software development (Jira, Sprints, CI/CD). Your ability to manage personalities and project timelines is exactly what tech teams need to stay organized.

Do you have experience with any project management tools like Jira or Asana in your current role? Translating your current workflow into those tools is a great way to start.

  • Charles, I've used Trello and Asana. The idea that it is too late to switch to IT in your 30s in the US for management is just false. If you can show you know how to handle stakeholders and manage a backlog, most tech companies will give you a shot regardless of your age.

I found that getting my PMP first, then adding Scrum, made me look very professional to recruiters. It shows you understand both traditional and modern frameworks.

  • Great advice, Carol. Combining traditional project management rigor with Agile flexibility is a winning combination for someone entering the tech space mid-career.
