Is AWS DevOps Engineer or Cloud Engineer better for a high salary career path?
I am currently evaluating my options between focusing strictly on Cloud Engineering or diving deep into the AWS DevOps path. With the 2026 market looking competitive, I want to know which specialization offers a higher ceiling for compensation. Does a DevOps professional with AWS expertise generally outearn a standard Cloud Architect or Administrator in the long run?

All answers to this question.
Based on current industry data from late 2023, AWS DevOps Engineers often command a premium because they bridge the gap between development and operations. While a Cloud Engineer focuses on the underlying infrastructure, a DevOps specialist manages the entire lifecycle via CI/CD pipelines. In the US market, senior AWS DevOps roles are frequently hitting the $170,000 range, whereas standard Cloud Engineers might hover around $150,000. However, if you transition into a Cloud Solutions Architect role later, the gap closes significantly as strategic design is also highly valued.

That is a great breakdown, but are you factoring in the specific AWS certifications that move the needle? I've noticed that the "Professional" level certs seem to be the real gatekeepers for those top-tier brackets.

Gregory, you hit the nail on the head. Holding the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional credential is often cited in job descriptions for roles paying north of $180k. It proves you can handle complex automation and governance at scale, which is exactly what justifies the higher salary compared to associate-level roles.

In my experience, DevOps pays more because of the "on-call" nature and the requirement to understand code, not just consoles. It's a harder role to fill for HR.

I agree with Scott. The hybrid nature of coding and infrastructure management creates a talent scarcity that naturally drives up the market value for AWS DevOps experts.
