What are the key differences between Attended and Unattended RPA for enterprise scaling?

Our organization is looking to scale our automation efforts, but we are confused about when to deploy Attended versus Unattended bots. Can someone explain the strategic differences in terms of ROI, infrastructure requirements, and typical use cases for each within a business environment?

All answers to this question.

Attended RPA works on a user’s workstation and is triggered by specific events, making it ideal for front-office tasks like customer service. Unattended RPA, however, runs on servers without human intervention, handling high-volume back-office processes. From a ROI perspective, Unattended bots usually offer higher gains because they operate 24/7. However, they require more robust server infrastructure and orchestration tools. Choosing between them depends on whether the process requires human judgment at specific intervals or if it can be fully mapped out and executed autonomously.

Regarding the infrastructure you mentioned, are you planning to use a cloud-based orchestrator or an on-premise solution? Also, how are you planning to manage the security credentials for the Unattended bots that need to access multiple legacy systems simultaneously without human supervision?

  • James, we are leaning towards a cloud-based orchestrator to reduce local hardware costs. For security, we use encrypted credential vaults provided by the RPA platform to ensure that no sensitive data is exposed while the bots log into our legacy ERP systems during off-peak hours.

Attended bots are great for boosting individual productivity, while Unattended bots are the backbone of digital transformation at the organizational level for data processing.

  • Exactly, Susan. We started with Attended bots to get quick wins, but our real digital transformation success happened once we shifted the heavy lifting to our Unattended server farm.
