How can Business Analysts use AI Chatbots to streamline requirements gathering in Agile?

I'm a Business Analyst working in an Agile environment and I'm curious if anyone has successfully used AI chatbots to automate the initial stages of requirements gathering? I'm looking for a way to let stakeholders input their needs via a conversational interface that can then draft initial user stories or acceptance criteria for the product backlog. Has anyone tried this approach yet?

All answers to this question.

AI bots are great for creating the first draft of acceptance criteria. They can quickly identify edge cases that a human might overlook during a busy sprint planning session.

  • I agree, Matthew. Using AI to spot those missing "negative scenarios" or edge cases has made our testing phase much smoother because the requirements are more comprehensive.

We actually piloted a "BA Bot" last year to handle intake for our internal software requests. The bot was programmed with a structured conversation flow to ask about the "Who, What, and Why" of a feature request. It then used a template to generate a draft user story in the 'As a... I want... So that...' format. While it didn't replace the BA, it saved us about 5 hours a week in initial documentation time. The key is to have the BA review and refine these drafts during backlog grooming rather than letting the bot post directly to Jira.

That's a fascinating use case, Barbara. Did you find that stakeholders were actually willing to provide detailed enough information to a bot, or did they still prefer a face-to-face meeting?

  • It was a mixed bag at first, James. Some stakeholders loved the 24/7 availability, but others gave very vague answers. We had to add "validation loops" where the bot would ask for clarification if the input was too short or lacked detail. Once we added those prompts, the quality of the automated drafts improved significantly. It’s really about designing the conversation to be as inquisitive as a human analyst would be during a discovery session.
