Will AI-driven automation eventually lead to a universal basic income necessity for citizens?

There is a lot of talk about how automation might lead to mass unemployment. If AI takes over the cognitive tasks and robots take over the physical ones, what is left for the average worker? Does this community think we are heading toward a crisis or a new era of leisure?

All answers to this question.

The transition period will be the hardest part of this shift. History shows that technology creates more jobs than it destroys, but the new jobs usually require high-level technical skills. AI-driven automation is unique because it scales so much faster than the steam engine or the internet did. We are likely to see a significant wealth gap grow before any government steps in with a solution like UBI. The focus for everyone right now should be on staying relevant by learning how to oversee these AI systems instead of competing against them directly.

How can we ensure that the transition to an automated economy doesn't leave the elderly behind?

  • Kevin, that is a vital point. Digital literacy programs are the only way to bridge that gap. Without specific social safety nets, the "digital divide" will become a permanent chasm in our society as automation accelerates.

I believe we will see a surge in "human-centric" roles like therapy, coaching, and the arts.

  • I agree with Melissa. Soft skills are the one thing that automation hasn't mastered yet.
