How do AI Agents differ from standard automated workflows in project management?
I’m seeing a lot of buzz about "AI Agents" replacing standard Zapier-style automations in Project Management. From what I gather, agents can "reason" through a task list. For those of you in PM roles, how are you actually using these agents? Are they just fancy triggers, or can they actually manage a Jira backlog or follow up on blockers autonomously?

The shift from "if-this-then-that" (IFTTT) to "Agentic Workflows" is massive for PMs. A standard automation might just move a card when a box is checked. An AI Agent, however, can be given a goal: "Ensure the Sprint remains on track." It can scan the backlog, identify tasks that are over-estimating, and even draft a Slack message to the dev asking for an update. I’ve been using an agentic layer in 2024 that autonomously summarizes daily standups into a "Red/Yellow/Green" status report for stakeholders, saving me at least 4 hours of manual synthesis every week.

Do these agents ever "hallucinate" or make wrong decisions regarding project priorities? I’d be terrified to let a bot autonomously ping my engineering team or re-order a backlog without human oversight. How do you build in the "Human-in-the-loop" (HITL) checks?

Diane, you definitely shouldn't give them full autonomy yet! The best practice is to have the agent "Draft" and then wait for a "Thumbs Up" in a tool like Slack or Microsoft Teams before it executes. This keeps you in control while the AI does 90% of the heavy lifting. Think of the agent as a very fast intern who needs a final sign-off before hitting "send."

Standard workflows are linear. AI agents are loops; they check their own work and adjust. That's the real difference in a complex project environment.
