How do I adjust my Instagram strategy to maintain reach after the 2024 algorithm update?

I’ve noticed a massive drop in organic reach on my business account over the last few months. My Reels aren't getting the same traction and static posts feel invisible. What specific engagement metrics is the Instagram algorithm prioritizing right now, and should I be focusing more on "Shares" and "Saves" than on "Likes" to get back onto the Explore page?

All answers to this question.

The 2024 update has shifted heavily toward "Send rate" or shares via DM. Instagram wants to see that your content is starting conversations between friends. "Likes" are now considered a low-tier engagement signal. To boost reach, you need to create "shareable" content—think relatable memes, hot takes, or educational carousels that people want to save for later. I switched my client's strategy from daily posting to three high-quality "Saveable" infographics per week, and we saw a 40% increase in non-follower reach within 30 days. Also, make sure your first three seconds of a Reel have a strong text hook to stop the scroll.

Are you utilizing the "Collabs" feature with other brands or influencers to tap into their audiences, or are you still relying solely on your own follower base for initial momentum?

  • Brian, I haven't tried Collabs yet because I was worried it might look too "spammy." However, after seeing how the reach has tanked, I think it's time to find a few non-competing brands in the lifestyle niche. I'm going to reach out to a few local partners this week to see if we can co-author a post. I've heard that the combined engagement in the first hour can really signal to the algorithm that the post is high-value, potentially pushing it to a much wider audience.

Don't sleep on Instagram Stories. Use the "Poll" and "Question" stickers to keep your current followers active. High Story engagement often leads to better Feed placement for your regular posts.

  • Jessica is right. Stories are the "warm-up" for the algorithm. If users interact with you there, the system assumes they want to see your main feed content too.
